With its dark burgundy flower buds, and deep pink, goblet-shaped blooms in the springtime, Susan is a magnolia that everyone should know about.
The glorious flowers (which also radiate a lovely scent) precede the appearance of rich green foliage which helps ensure visual interest right until the end of autumn.
A compact, shrubby tree, typically growing to just three metres tall and wide, this magnolia is perfect as a feature tree for both front and back lawns.
Initially grown in the 1950s by William F. Kosar and Dr. Francis de Vos at the US National Arboretum, in Washington, D.C, Susan has long been a highly-regarded magnolia variety.
To top it all off, its also an RHS Award of Garden Merit winner an award conferred upon those plants that have shown to perform particularly well in British gardens.
